However, if you are stuck for ideas, here are some great indoor and outdoor locations in Edmonton and area that are well suited to portraits and weddings.

Government House (and previous Royal Alberta Museum) – 12845 – 102 Avenue NW

Although the Royal Alberta Museum is closed as its new location in the heart of downtown is being constructed, the museum grounds in Old Glenora are still open and one of the most popular wedding and portrait locations in Edmonton.  The museum grounds and Government House offer many different backgrounds for photography, ranging from classic architecture to mature trees. Fort Edmonton Park

Step into the past at Fort Edmonton Park! Turn of the century buildings, horse-drawn carriages, and a steam train are just a few of the highlights. It is a wonderful place for wedding photos and can add to the uniqueness of a themed wedding. Fort Edmonton can also accommodate the rest of your day, with facilities for ceremonies and banquets. Edmonton City Hall

City Hall is a wonderful piece of modern architecture in the centre of downtown. It features large staircases, various pillars and railings, and a simple color scheme. And City Hall is right next to Churchill Square and the Art Gallery of Alberta, with lots of excellent outdoor options for photos as well. Contact the Civic Events office for rates and restrictions on indoor use.

Muttart Conservatory

There are three pyramids featuring arid, tropical and temperate climate zones and one show pyramid that changes frequently to suit the seasons. Not generally suitable for large groups but can accommodate smaller ones. The outdoor grounds are also a beautiful place for photos. This is a popular location year round so call early to avoid disappointment.

University of Alberta – Rutherford House

Located on the University campus, Rutherford House makes a great indoor and outdoor location for photos. Indoors space is limited however, so don’t plan on having large groups inside. Call for rates and availability.

The Arts Building has wonderful stone architecture, with creeping vines and mature trees plus a wide set of stairs suitable for small and large groups. Inside you’ll find beautiful stonework with soft window light and plenty of space for your photos. Can be booked for indoor or outdoor photos as well as ceremonies can be held inside in Convocation Hall.

University of Alberta – Timms Centre

Natural light, exceptional architecture, lush greenery, and a magnificent curved staircase provide a wonderful setting for indoor wedding and portrait photography.

Hotel MacDonald

The Hotel Macdonald, one of the oldest hotels in Edmonton, is as rich in history as it is in photographic opportunities. Beautiful grounds overlook the river valley, and the magnificent architecture and classy interior make this hotel a great place for photos, provided you are having your wedding and/or reception there.

Alberta Legislature – 10800 – 97 Avenue NW

The Alberta Legislature Building and grounds boast a large park setting with an abundance of large, mature trees, flower beds, a fountain and reflecting pool, as well as magnificent architecture. Photographs are permitted outdoors only and do not require a reservation or payment.

Devonian Botanic Garden

Lush gardens and acres of space offer plenty of locations to choose from. The Japanese Garden is the most popular location in the gardens featuring a serene waterfall, bridges, gazebos, a pond and much more. It is located about a half-hour drive from Edmonton’s west-end but is worth the drive! (no indoor photos)

Red Willow Park – St. Albert

A beautiful trail system winds along the Sturgeon River, offering many possibilities for outdoor photos. Some notable features include a large wooden train trestle, St. Albert Place (city hall) and various other bridges and parks along the trails.
